Professor Layton beats Zelda and Kratos to the Bafta

Last night, dozens of stars congregated in London to attend the video game Baftas. Jonathan Ross was there with his red-haired wife Jane Goldman. Danni Minogue was there. The Chuckle Brothers were there. Royle Family star and Pocket Gamer marketing manager Alex Rennie look-a-like Ralf Little was there.

I was in bed.

Naturally the awards were mostly for home console titles, with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare taking best Gameplay and Super Mario Galaxy taking Best Game, despite it being more than a year since the release of both. Steven Spielberg's Boom Blox won the prize for the best Casual game.

There was a Handheld category, though, and it was taken by Professor Layton and the Curious Village. Surprisingly, it beat off competition from God of War: Chains of Olympus and Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - the two games we'd have put money on.

Though the list of nominations was largely predictable, it's good to see Soul Bubbles in there.

Congratulations to the nominees, and slightly more sincere congratulations to the winner, for whom the buzz is no doubt intensified by the revelation today that a Professor Layton trilogy is on its way.
