February’s shaping up to be a good mobile month

Galaxy on Fire 2 mobile release date announced

Fishlabs’s Galaxy on Fire is one of the hottest titles we’ve ever had on Pocket Gamer. We loved it, you loved it and together, we all continue to love it in a very passionate, yet respectfully platonic, way.

But it’s been three years since that sweet game hit the virtual shelves, putting the sequel very high up on our rabid fan boy list. We’ve just been sent some awesome news by our buddies at Fishlabs, however, and we’re told it’ll be with us by the end of February. Cashback!

The game picks up with hero Keith T. Maxwell (we can’t say for sure, but we like to think the ‘T’ stands for Tiberius) awakening 35-years after his first adventure, and the galactic balance of power has shifted considerably.

The game then promises to take you on a sky-rocketing adventure through 10 hours of gameplay across 20 solar systems and 100 unique space stations with an extensive trading system.

You can equip over 30 individual spaceships with a variety of weapons and devices, or chill out in the space lounge and meet other humans and aliens.

Mini-games provide the opportunity to land on asteroids and mine various ores from which equipment and trade goods can later be manufactured, and with new special weapons, squadron gameplay (with up to three mercenaries), and the option of taking control of gun turrets, Galaxy on Fire 2 amounts to one of the most ambitious and expansive mobile titles ever seen.

But it doesn’t stop with the gameplay. To launch Galaxy on Fire 2, Fishlabs has rolled out a whole new marketing model to deliver the game to us and to help combat piracy.

The game will be free to download directly from Fishlabs (and partners) complete with the first solar system in its entirety. After that, you’ll need to register online to get the next five solar systems, also for free.

Only later in the game do you then need to buy the full product and unlock the remaining 15 solar systems. The price is currently pegged at EUR5.97 or equivalent, which seems like a pretty decent price considering that, by the time you open your wallet, you’ll be 100 per cent sure that this is the game for you.

Galaxy on Fire 2 is a huge step forward in mobile gaming, in every respect. It’s exactly this kind of blue sky thinking that the mobile industry needs to compete with the likes of the iPhone, and if Galaxy on Fire 2 turns out to be as awesome as we expect, Apple might well have some competition for the first time in six months.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
