How to set up PSP Connect

We've already remarked about the coolness of connecting your PSP to play Resistance: Retribution with a controller. Setting it up, however, takes a bit of know-how. While not all of the features shipping with the final game in March are available right now, you can still test out PSP Connect using the pre-order demo. Follow our step-by-step directions to get going.

Before anything else, you need to get your hands on the Resistance: Retribution demo! Select retailers are offering it with pre-orders of the full game, which is slated for a March release. Pre-ordering the game will net you a code that can be redeemed on PlayStation Network. You have three options for download: PSP, PlayStation 3, or PC. PSP is the easiest of the three methods. Using firmware version 5.0 or higher, you can access the PlayStation Store to redeem the code. Pop on over the the "PlayStation Network" tab on the XMB and enter the PlayStation Store. Scroll to the "Redeem Codes" icon at the top right of the browser. Enter the code in the fields shown and accept the download. The demo will appear in the "Games" tab of the XMB on your memory stick.
Power up your PlayStation 3 and start Resistance 2. You must have a copy of Resistance 2, otherwise you won't be able to access the PSP Connect feature. It only applies to the specific connection between it and Resistance: Retribution.

Once you get to the main menu for Resistance 2, turn on your PSP. Go to the "Games" tab on the XMB and locate the folder in which your copy of the Resistance: Retribution demo is saved. Boot it up and when it settles on the main menu, connect the PSP to your PlayStation 3 using a USB cable.

With the two systems connected, scroll to the "Options" on the Resistance 2 menu. Under that sub-menu should be a category "Connect PSP." Select it to prompt two choices for PSP Connect: infect your PSP or activate PSP Plus for play with a controller. Infecting the Resistance: Retribution demo doesn't do anything (this only applies to the final game where new intel documents, special content, etc. unlocks), so the only real option is to activate PSP Plus.

Once you select PSP Plus, control of the game is granted to the Sixaxis or DualShock 3 controller connected to your PlayStation 3. Don't turn off your PlayStation 3, though, as it will end the connection.

Optional: If you own a PSP-2000 or PSP-3000, you can pipe the game through composite cables to a television set. After setting up PSP Connect, hold down the video button at the bottom of your PSP to output the a/v signal through the composite cable connected to your display. Next, switch to the input mode on your set to view the game. Now you can play with a controller on the display!
