The LEGO games have been one of the most innovative gaming series of recent years. The movie tie-ins, such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Batman, have provided excellent fodder for the offbeat humour and brick-based reworkings of epic encounters.

And the games' attention to detail in terms of replayability, co-operative modes and ability to generally mix things up have been as important.

So we're pretty excited to hear about the DS exclusive LEGO Battles.

The first LEGO game not to be based on a movie since Bionicles, it combines three basic LEGO themes enabling players to use the characters, objects and locations from the LEGO Castle, LEGO Pirates and LEGO Space sets.

The gameplay is described as 'build and battle', as you'll get to create your own bases and build up battle teams using different characters that you'll then use to take over enemy bases.

Six storylines and 70 levels are promised, as well as multiplayer battles using wireless DS multi-card play. (Sadly, no one seems to be using the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection mode much any more.)

However what we're most looking forward to is the ability to customise your battle squad. Warner Bros says you'll be able to have pirate swordsmen fighting alongside wizards and aliens; dragons battling ninjas; and pirate ships launching broadsides against spacecraft and knights.

And even better is that LEGO Battles - which is being developed by new Canadian studio HellBent Games set up by people from EA Vancouver, Rockstar Vancouver and Radical Games - is due for release this summer.
