In a week or two, it’ll be a full year since we first sang huzzah about the return of the Gizmondo. It met with delays almost straight away, as its graphics chip proved difficult to acquire, then the May release date was pushed back to December (this December, that is).

A glimmer of hope was sparked in-between when the original intention to run Gizmondo 2 on the outdated Windows CE OS was replaced by the potential-laden Google Android system, though a Windows CE 6 option was apparently still going to be available to WinMo stalwarts.

Well, it seems the current economic downturn has caused the Gizmondo 2 to fall among thieves once again, and according to Gizmodo the system’s investors have dropped out – leaving CEO Carl Freer once again redesigning the hardware sequel on his own.

Freer has promised the device will still be coming after another redesign, this time featuring downloadable content and even a smartphone – making it something of a competitor to… well, everything in the pocket gaming industry. A bold task, to be sure, and although our breath is no longer on hold, we hope to see something concrete in the New Year. Stay tuned.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
