iPhone’s SimCity breaks App Store ground

The classic community building game is here

iPhone’s SimCity breaks App Store ground

As soon as EA said “iPhone SimCity”, we could see the game in our mind. Despite the small hurdle of losing the mouse for controls, it was easy to see how that cult classic game would suit Apple’s touchscreen platform.

And there’s rejoicing in the virtual streets as SimCity is finally launched - although timing might conspire against it a little, since it landed at almost the same time as Pocket Gamer’s first ever iPhone Platinum Award winner, Rolando.

Still, the iPhone community can handle two big games at once, and SimCity’s launch is great news for anyone hoping to find an iPhone or iPod touch under the tree this year.

EA has promised all along that this won’t be a reduced or streamlined version of SimCity just because it’s on a handheld, and judging by the screenshots it’s as good as its word.

Although I’m not really in a position to comment - as I don’t actually have SimCity on my iPhone (yet) - there does seem to be a growing number of comments on the game’s App Store page regarding crashing problems. If this pans out to be the game, we’ll keep you posted as to any fixes and updates administered by EA, so keep checking back.

Below is a short video to demonstrate the level of detail and extravagance the metropolis building simulator goes to, and you can head on over to the App Store to take a closer look by clicking the ‘Buy It!’ button.

One last quick tip for an non-iPhone savvy Santas out there who'll be bringing one down the chimney this year - SimCity and Rolando will see any naughty or nice recipients through to the New Year. You're welcome.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
