Gameloft is celebrating today as its strategy/mini-game collection The Oregon Trail picked up the Best Casual Mobile Game of 2008 award at Spike TV’s ceremony.

The VGA celebrates the year’s best PC, console and mobile games, selected by a panel of judges comprising journalists within the gaming industry. The winners were announced live at the VGA awards ceremony in Culver City, California.

“We are honoured to win this coveted award and pleased that The Oregon Trail game continues to excite new audiences on the mobile platform,” said Gonzague de Vallois, Gameloft’s senior vice president of publishing.

The Oregon Trail is one of our bestselling titles and we are proud to see how players are engaged with its nostalgic, fun and casual gameplay.”

Of course, The Oregon Trail has already bagged itself a prestigious Pocket Gamer Gold Award for its awesome visuals, intuitive music and creative mini-games as you take on the role of a wagon train leader traversing the perilous trail to the Wild West.

“We’re extremely pleased by this award. Gameloft has done a great job recreating The Oregon Trail experience on mobile platforms,” said David Bass, general manager of The Learning Company - developer of the original Apple II game.

“The immense popularity of this mobile game confirms our belief that The Oregon Trail continues to be a strong brand with universal appeal, more than 30 years after it was originally conceived.”

Congratulations from Pocket Gamer, and while we’re talking Oregon Trail, how about an iPhone version, eh (nudge nudge)? We’d tick that box in a second.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
