Frenzic

Frenzic is the kind of quick-thinking title that constantly has your brain, if not your fingers, under pressure, giving your reaction time the most glorious test it will ever come up against. Frenzied yet simple, this is one puzzler that equally takes a slice of concentrated effort from your fingers and mind.

Faced with six empty circles, your job is to fill them up by quickly placing six pie pieces in each one. Clearing each circle rewards you with a bevy of points. There's a bit of a catch, though: game is very picky about just which pieces you can put where. Oh, and it doesn't give you a lot of time to make your choice, either – about five seconds, in fact.

Dividing the circle into six slices, Frenzic flashes up just which piece you've got to place next in the middle of the screen, meaning all you have to do is find a circle where that particular pie piece isn't already taken. Tap the circle in question before time runs out and then prepare yourself for the following slice of pie. It's quick and simple play, but it's certainly not easy.

That's because the slices come in three different colours – green, orange and purple – and while it's possible to place them anywhere there's a gap with little regard for their particular colour, the game's secondary aim is to try and fill an entire circle with pieces all of the same hue. Doing so is the only way to reach a high score, with solid-coloured circles unlocking power-ups that can really boost your score. Double points, a slower timer, added a life or even a nuke that clears space for more pieces can really make the difference.

Not that you get much time to decide when to use said bonuses. Frenzic is all about split-second decisions that separate those who are happy tapping the screen for a few minutes from those who want to hammer away for an afternoon, topping the global scoreboard. It's most definitely the latter group that will get the most from the game.

It can literally be over in a minute or two if you don't play your cards, or pieces, right. Even taking the supposedly easy path and ignoring the lure of power-ups is no walk in the park. You'll curse when you get it wrong, but then you'll take a few deep breaths and try again, tapping away like mad, making decision after decision before your brain has even had a chance to take on board just what you should be doing and when.

Frenzic a glorious reflex title that will sit on your pod or phone for months and months, offering a brain-teasing refuge every time you've got a spare few minutes (or half an hour, depending on how good you are). That's presuming your fingers don't suffer a nervous breakdown mid-game, of course.
