Atari keeps the iPhone classics coming with Centipede

So maybe Atari didn't impress us too much when it first started clearing out the competition to make room for its own iPhone version of Super Breakout, but once the beautifully revamped Missile Command came along our hard feelings softened a little.

Now retro gamers can throw a wink and a coy smile Atari's way once again as it brings us an iPhone version of the awesome shmup Centipede, too.

The all new virtual-arthropod features three modes of play – Ultra, Arcade and Classic. You can probably guess what classic mode entails (in case you can't, it looks just like the classic coin-op), while arcade mode offers the same gameplay only with fancy new 21st Century graphics.

Ultra mode also enhances the gameplay to incorporate a bunch of power-ups, such as smart bombs, rapid fire and an anti-centipede laser. Very useful those, especially when you're being attacked by an intergalactic alien centipede.

You can never have too many retro classics, and although £2.99 might be asking a little too much in our thrifty, credit crunch-afflicted opinion, old people might be very excited about gobbling this nostalgic invertebrate up. Hit the 'Buy It!' button to go to the App Store and take a look at Centipede.

Spanner Spencer
Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
