O2 mobile game download charts and new releases: December 5th

Naturally we've all been kind of obsessed with the iPhone lately, and it's been moving further away from the mobile gaming arena and more toward becoming a handheld console. But there's a new release on the O2 portal this week that serves as a timely reminder that the iPhone is in fact a phone, and shares just as many similarities with the mobile platform as it does with the DS and PSP.

Space Monkey was announced for mobiles way back in June, but development attention was presumably switched to the iPhone version. Finally, however, Space Monkey is here for our mobile, and alongside it's entertainingly surreal combination of monkeys, space suits and intergalactic junk, it demonstrates the beginnings of a new trend – iPhone games being ported to the mobile (rather than the other way around).

It'll be interesting to if this is a sign of things to come, with developers initially concentrating on the mobile platform's bigger brother (being the iPhone), then maximising on a game's potential by bringing it to the mobile. Undoubtedly we'll see this reflected in the O2 new releases and charts, if this is indeed a new territory mobile game development is migrating toward, which will be no bad thing – as you can see once again, nothing's managed to unseat the major players just yet.
