Friday Freebie: Two DS demos, some PSP short films...

| Friday Freebie

Seeing as we are firmly in the vice-like grip of a global economic hell quake and Christmas is now bearing down on us with the full weight of an entire choir of turkey-stuffed carol singers, excuses for shamelessly giving in to our year-long Scrooge-like tendencies are no longer necessary.

So let's thoroughly revel in this weekly opportunity to indulge in the handheld gaming fruits the internet offers up freely.

First, just to mix things up a bit, to the DS. This week Nintendo's handheld has been graced with two taster titles via the Wii's Nintendo Channel. They are Dragon Ball: Origins and Prince of Persia: The Fallen King. Neither title is out yet so both are well worth checking out, especially if you want a sneak preview of something Santa might bring you. Have you been good all year?

As for Sony's pocket console, the PSP Store has not had any new demos added (boo, hiss, etc). It has, however, had a new collection of videos added from a series called Shoot!. The idea behind the series is that six Hollywood executive producers will each choose a spritely young director from their home country that is yet to be jaded by the savagery of the industry.

The chosen directors will then bound enthusiastically headlong into a commission to make a short high-definition film that "captures the essence of PlayStation: Play, Create, Share, Connect, Discover and Challenge." Shortly afterward most of them will probably eke out a comfortable living filming 'adult entertainment' and constantly looking for opportunities to incorporate their Ingmar Bergman-like genius into the scripts (probably).

We're now up to Episode 2 and apparently one of the Hollywood Executives doing the picking is Jerry Bruckheimer of Pirates of the Caribbean fame so fingers crossed we get to see a boat-sized PSP get eaten by an angry mollusk, y'know, just for the spectacle.

For iPhone users we have a cracking handout this week. To celebrate the 500th download of the excellent shooter 2079, developer Eric Tong is offering the game for free for 48 hours. You'll need to hurry up if you want to cash in on such generosity, though, as the offer will end tomorrow at 12am PST (UK readers you have until 8am tomorrow morning, in other words).

That's it for now but next week we have a big surprise for you. To find out what it is as soon as it goes live, just click 'Track It!' Excited? You should be.
