Turn your Game Gear into an Atari 2600

When retro isn't retro enough

Retro engineer extraordinaire Chris Koopa has managed to shoehorn an Atari 2600 into a Sega Game Gear case. Asking why is as redundant as the device itself, but there's no denying that Chris deserve a Pocket Gamer Gold Award for the effort. He's not getting one – that'd be crazy talk – but we acknowledge that he deserves it.

The Atari Gear 2600, as it's been dubbed, accepts full size VCS cartridges, has 40 built in games and runs for an impressive eight hours on its AA batteries (something modern hardware manufacturers ought to take note of).

As unnecessary and time-intensive as projects such as these tend to be, it's pretty much impossible not to want one. And considering the huge number of Atari games in comparison to Game Gear ones, this is likely to get a lot more use. Check it out.

Kudos, Koopa!

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
