In truth, most puzzle games are built on the foundations of previous titles, which is perfectly acceptable so long as it still makes a suitable contribution to the genre. Subway Shuffle is one of the few that actually invented its own unique gameplay features, however (although shades of Traffic Jam are visible when the light catches it just right), and has just gone on sale for just 59p.

The game involves guiding your subway car to its destination by moving other trains out of the way. These other carriages can only move on their designated tracks, which is where the puzzle mechanics stem from.

Designed and developed by MIT computer scientist Robert A. Hearn (of Claris Works fame), Subway Shuffle is going cheap until December 2nd, so get onboard quickly if it takes your fancy (hit the 'Buy It!' button to get you there quicker). If you're undecided, there's a gameplay video below to drive the concept home.

Pocket Gamer's own Rob Hearn wasn't directly involved in Subway Shuffle's design, in case you're wondering. Our Mr Hearn tells us that he would have gone to MIT to study computer science too, but couldn't be bothered.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
