Next-gen gaming on the go

Even those of us who spend almost every waking minute playing and thinking about pocket games have a mental separation between the mobile platform and the super-consoles. For some reason it feels inherently difficult to place the two together - they're two different factions of a global market.

But the truth is that mobile games and console games aren't considered separate entities by the developers and publishers. The designers behind our games realise that while we're at work, on the bus, out and about or waiting for our partners to finish watching Strictly Come Dancing, we're not playing on our consoles. But our phones are with us day and night - never more than a layer of fabric away and always ready to fire up a big name game.

Converting the likes of Saints Row 2 or Mercenaries 2 to the micro screen is a big job for the game companies, but the potential to keep those vital developments close to our gaming thumbs is vital to their success. Other titles, like Buzz! The Mobile Quiz and Spore Origins, are actually being led by their mobile versions, with the consoles providing marketing support for the handheld platform.

While console sales are being counted in millions, mobile phone figures are being now counted by the billion, so this week we decided to take a look at the other next gen platform - the 100% Mobile Console. Your phone. The 100% Console

Spanner Spencer
Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
