We took a look at the development video of Cube – an iPhone port of the unique PC first-person-shooter (FPS) – a few weeks back, and already the game has appeared on the App Store.

What's even more impressive is the price. Just for you, Cube is being offered for free.

This initial iPhone release is currently being promoted as something of a tech demo – warning players that some of the functionality is still being tweaked by the developer.

There are a few framerate issues here and there, and the textures are very compressed, but considering the dev team behind it aren't asking any money for the iPhone's first single and multiplayer FPS, it's hard to criticise any shortcomings.

They're also working hard on an update which they hope will address many of the issues this initial test run will highlight. The community-based nature of the original PC version of Cube suggests more and more people might soon get in on the open source development.

Head on over to the App Store to check it out, and if Cube looks like your kind of shooter, it's probably worth taking a look at the PC version too.

Spanner Spencer
Spanner Spencer
Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
