Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has confirmed the DSi will be released in Europe in 2009.

"Specific plans will be unveiled by our local subsidiaries, but an autumn or year-end launch would probably be too late," Iwata told analysts and reporters on Friday, as reported by Reuters.

The news comes the day before the new hardware launches in Japan.

Nintendo had previously said it had hoped to launch the DSi outside of Japan around spring 2009 – this is more concrete confirmation that looks to be the case.

The company has also confirmed it has shipped 200,000 DSi units for sale on launch day in Japan and plans to ship a further 100,000 in the week starting November 4th.

Iwata also used the meeting to speak about the current economic slowdown, saying Nintendo so far seems to be unaffected.

"With the business environment having changed this much, we of course need to stay alert. But so far I haven't seen even the slightest sign that overseas DS and Wii demand is being affected by the economy."

Lucky them.
