When we saw Real Racing at this year's Leipzig Games Convention show, we were blown away.

The game, developed by Australian studio Firemint, blended spiffing 3D visuals with innovative connectivity, including a spin-off Facebook app and YouTube video replays.

PocketGamer.biz caught up with CEO Robert Murray, who says progress is going well on the game.

"We have been working furiously on Real Racing and we are more than happy with the results," he says. "I really believe that we have the best racing game on any handheld device, and I would hope that some of the unique features will make a splash."

Sadly, there's no news on when and for what platform the game will come out - back in Leipzig, it looked like a toss-up between iPhone and N-Gage.

Murray says the Web 2.0 elements are crucial to Real Racing's appeal, using the developer's in-house Cloudcell technology to make it all work seamlessly.

"I think it is an awesome thing for the player, but potentially very challenging and expensive for publishers and developers," he says.

"We came to the opinion quite a while ago that this is the future and we might as well get stuck into it rather than wait till it becomes a necessity."

For more on Firemint's mobile-meets-Web 2.0 philosophy, and the thorny issue on whether the company will be able to make enough money from releasing Real Racing for iPhone rather than DS, check out the full interview.
