O2 mobile game download charts and new releases: October 10th

The charts have been pretty static for ages now, but this week were seeing almost no changes at all – pretty unusual, even for a list that's populated with so many untouchable games as this one.

Still, the good news is there's some damned exciting new releases, which we can only hope will give the Top 10 the shuffle it really needs. There's a distinct theme of old meets new this week, with strange combinations of classic elements coupled with new ideas.

First and foremost, of course, is the latest in the LEGO series, Batman. What's particularly intriguing about these massively successful franchises is how modern-day mythologies like Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Batman – all very much long-lived classics themselves – are being mixed with a beloved kids toy to create a new genre of video games. A whole generation will grow up remembering LEGO not as physical building-blocks, but a style of gaming reserved for rejuvenating old characters. It'd be weird, if the games didn't work so supremely well.

Likewise, James Bond is given a conceptual makeover in Top Agent, as you become a trainee 'double 0'; reaching into the mythos of the most famous spy in the world without actually bringing him into play.

And topping things off is something of a well kept coin-op secret; Volfied. Many probably won't remember this shmup-styled puzzle game from the '80s arcades, but it's devoured more than its share of 10p pieces and is back, apparently out of the blue, to introduce a new generation of pocket gamers to its classic gameplay.

It seems a game is ever old, so long as people are still finding new ways to play it.
