Fashion type: 'Nintendo brings to fashion accessories what Prada brought to stylish messenger bags'

Has gaming just lost its geek image for good?

We've watched the rise of 'girl games' on DS. We've seen it advertised in Mizz magazine. We've seen Paris Hilton playing on pink crystal encrusted one. But still we feel Nintendo has surpassed itself with its latest partnership with US designer bag lending company FromBagstoRiches.com.

From Bags to Riches - in case you're not aware - enables ladies (and men, we don't think they mind) to rent designer handbags that are far beyond their means for one month. So, for a fee, you can have a Prada, Gucci or Juicy Couture bag slung over your shoulder. Presumably setting off your H&M evening gown and bargain Asda heels.

As reported by IGN, Nintendo has partnered with the company to give its subscribers opportunity to borrow a DS and games, free of charge, with a 30-day rental from the website. A variety of colours will be available to pick from - including metallic silver, metallic rose, onyx and black. The games on offer include Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir, Brain Training and Nintendogs.

There to spout the usual meaningless fashion words was Bags to Riches CEO, Kara Richter, who said of the partnership: "In today's fashion world, carrying customized accessories means everything. With the addition of the stylish Nintendo DS, Nintendo brings to fashion accessories what Prada brought to stylish messenger bags."

We don't know what that is either.

Cammie Dunaway, NOA's Vice President of Sales & Marketing meanwhile said: "Almost half the Nintendo DS systems sold in the United States last year belong to women. With From Bags to Riches, we can help the growing population of female gamers test drive some great Nintendo DS games - and look good while they're doing it."

If all this means the sort of people who are going to be playing the DS in public are the same ones who wear silk parachute pants and stilettos then we might have to flog ours now. Still if the DS is a high-end fashion accessory, hopefully that means I'll still officially be 'on-trend' when I'm playing mine sitting on the sofa in a sweat-stained dressing gown.
