Direct access PSP Store on the way
Sony finally frees its handheld console from the PS3 and PC
Presumably this is something Sony has had on the slate for quite some time, so although it might not be directly inspired by the iPhone's App Store, it was at least encouraged into life by it.
A new direct access online shop has been announced for the PSP, allowing users to finally dispense with the PS3 or PC as highly expensive portals for downloading content to the handheld. Thus far it's only been confirmed for a Japanese launch this autumn, though it's expected to become a worldwide launch due to the net-based mechanics of the shop. To celebrate, a free copy of Mainichi Issyo Portable is reported to be available to download once the store is active.
This new era of Sony led connectivity will also introduce an 'infrastructure mode' for internet connected PS3s. This will allow PSP units to connect to the console and access online interactivity functions, such as multiplayer gaming.
As tempting as it is to stand on a chair and shout "It's about bloody time!", there's no denying how exciting this is, and another good reason to take interest in the PSP's time of rebirth.
