Gameloft to release Death Race mobile game

Gameloft has announced that it's releasing a mobile game based on Death Race, the upcoming blockbuster film.

Due for release this month, it'll see you racing in one of seven 'steel beasts' from the movie, each one using different weapons.

There'll be a five-episode Story mode, with challenges including Race, Rampage, Eliminator, Shooter and Boss Battles. Once completed, there'll also be a Single Race mode to play those challenges individually.

According to Jeremy Laws of Universal Pictures, the studio behind the film, it's a good subject for a mobile game due to being "inherently game ready".

Gameloft will be crossing its fingers and hoping the movie itself is half-decent. Rival mobile publisher Glu Mobile got stung earlier this summer when it made a game based on Speed Racer, which flopped at the box office.

Is Death Race any good? Well, it's a car-based film starring Jason Statham and directed by Paul W S Anderson, so the omens are… well… One reviewer has already described it as "horrible".

Ouch. Maybe Gameloft should be crossing its toes, too. Of course, given the company's form with racing titles, the actual game should be worth playing.
