The massive combined sales of DS and Wii could mean Nintendo is named as the world's biggest console maker at the end of this year if it meets expected sales targets.

For 13 years, Sony has held the title thanks to the success of its PlayStation home consoles and the PSP. However, The Times has reported Nintendo could be set to steal this accolade if predicted sales for the rest of the year for both companies are accurate.

Says The Times report: "Though currently riding high on continuing strong sales of the PlayStation Portable and the recent launch of Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4, Sony seems likely to run a close second to Nintendo by the end of year if the two companies attain their respective shipment targets."

Much of that success is down to DS, which - as revealed at Nintendo's press conference at this year's E3 - is expected to shift over 100 million units worldwide by March 2009. Nintendo fan boys can rejoice - it's like being back in the glory days of the NES, in a time when Sony made video recorders instead of hit first-person shooters. And who would have thought then that it would take Nintendo 13 years to get back on top?
