Console redesign could get rid of GBA slot and replace it with tilt technology

E3 has barely begun and the rumours are already pouring in, pre-Nintendo's official press conference later today, regarding possible new features set to be introduced for DS.

The rumours originate from IGN - so perhaps come with a bit more kudos than if they were speculation from some fan site we've never heard of.

Firstly, IGN's Matt Casamassina reports that sources have told him Nintendo is planning to remove GBA functionality from the DS. Perhaps something that wouldn't be surprising if a redesign is on the cards - after all, does anyone play GBA games any more?

However, if the rumour is true it would have a few implications. Namely that games such as Guitar Hero: On Tour, which comes with a peripheral that uses the slot, would be left a tad stuffed.

It would also mean that IGN's second rumour - that Activision is planning on releasing a DS accelerometer which will fit into the GBA slot - probably isn't true. Not unless Nintendo has failed to inform Activision. Probably not the case.

As a final stab at second-guessing Nintendo's plans, another rumour has emerged that Nintendo is currently working on some sort of DS accelerometer tech - which could potentially be built into a re-designed DS.

We like The Internet's style. Just keep guessing at things and something is bound to be right. We'll hopefully find out the truth later today at Nintendo's press conference, and of course will be letting you know as soon as the words are out of Iwata's mouth.
