Don't get too excited, though - it's only for Taiwan

Nintendo hopes to expand further in Taiwan and South Korea and plans to do so by releasing a special localised version of the DS and working with local developers to help them create DS titles.

According to Japanese newspaper Nikkei and as picked up by industry news giant gi.biz, Nintendo is working on a special version of the DS for Taiwan, which will be sold through mobile phone shops.

No specifics have been released about how it will differ to the DS the rest of the world knows and loves, but it will apparently be available by the end of July and there are plans to launch it in China later in the year.

In South Korea Nintendo has also been working with local developers and expects 20 games will be shipped from the territory before the end of 2008.

Despite the stepping up of piracy laws, reports indicate Taiwan is still one of the largest producers of counterfeit games in the world. Presumably, by offering an alternative gaming device more difficult to hack or cheaper to buy games for, Nintendo will at least be salvaging some profits from the area.
