Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi wages spore war on DS

Back this time last year, it emerged that new studio Red Fly was planning to release a quirky little DS game featuring some characters known as the Mushroom Men. The whole thing was still on the drawing board though, and little more has been revealed about the game since.

Until now that is. Today, the studio has spoken out a bit more about the game - now titled Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi - and what exactly it is mushroom men get up to when they're not lurking in dark, damp places.

It seems the game begins with a meteor plummeting to Earth and showering the place with green space dust which affects all the plant life. Some of which - such as the mushrooms - acquire sentience. While things like insects and animals are transformed into semi-intelligent, warring communities. You can probably see where this is going.

So the player is thrown into the game at the point when the mushrooms get smart and start forming nations in different territories. Of course, all of these nice little tribes are immediately under threat from the evil spiders, hornets and beetles and so on and the 'Spore Wars' begin. Players start off learning how to live off the land but are quickly plunged into a war not only with other creatures, but other mushroom tribes.

A mushroom-based strategy game then - whatever next? Rise of the Fungi is coming out on both DS and Wii, with the DS version to be released first. That's scheduled for an October release, so prepare for fungi war around then.
