iPhone gaming news has been a little quiet over the last month or so, perhaps because all those developers that now finally have their hands on the long anticipated SDK are currently beavering away behind closed doors, trying to make good use of it.

Indeed, a mysteriously unnamed developer has already got to the prototype stage with something it calls the iControlpad, a device that connects to the iPhone to give it a PSP-esque control set-up.

The iControlpad connects to the iPhone's dock connector, adding a D-pad and four face buttons to the left and right sides. The finished version is set to include Start and Select buttons too, and will apparently be much more "sleek and fitting" than the slightly dog eared prototype pictured here.

According to the the iControlpad site, the device is being aimed squarely at the homebrew crowd and will only work on jailbroken iPhones. As such, it's less than officially recognized by Apple.

Even so, it's a pretty nifty idea and, who knows, perhaps an official peripheral that does something similar to the iControlpad will emerge before long - it's not like Apple hasn't been thinking about it...
