One interesting snippet from EA's announcement press release that it's adding smartphone games to its mobile line-up was a quote from Seamus McAteer, senior analyst for statistics-loving firm, M:Metrics.

"More people are consuming mobile games than ever before," McAteer began, somewhat predictably. "Last month, 7.5 million people downloaded and played a game on their phone, outnumbering other mobile activities – like listening to music and participating in social networks."

That's not an inconsiderable amount of people but in the grand scheme of all things mobile, it may not mean much. Until, that is, McAteer throws in a little perspective. "Smartphone users in particular are avid consumers of games," he reveals, "with 7.3 per cent downloading a game in the month – more than double the market average."

No wonder publishers like EA are sensing a commercial opportunity, eh?
