RealNetworks announces touchscreen phone support for its games
Little Shop of Treasures is the first of over a dozen titles now ready
A couple of announcements from RealNetworks (and its mobile game publishing arm, RealArcade) have come out of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, not least the news of the company's plans to launch games for touchscreen phones.
The first of its titles to support smeary screened mobiles will be 'hidden object' game Little Shop of Treasures, set for release in April. The franchise was launched in 2007 and is one of the top five most downloaded games in Real's catalogue, having shifted five million downloads globally.
Little Shop of Treasures isn't alone, and Real announced that over a dozen of its games have now been optimised for touchscreen compatibility, a move the company believes puts it on the right track considering Strategy Analytics has forecast nearly 30 per cent of phones will be touchscreen-enabled by 2010.
The way things are developing, we wouldn't be surprised if that figure turned out to be conservative. Anyway, we'll report further on Real's touchscreen-happy titles as soon as we get our hands on them.
