The mobile industry had been predicting a GooglePhone for some time before, last year, Google announced that instead of making its own handset, it would be launching an open mobile platform called Android.

At the Mobile World Congress show this year, several chipset manufacturers are showing the first implementations of their hardware running Android in early versions. This includes Qualcomm, who has even knocked up a mobile game running on the platform.

Here it is:

Yes, that's a touchscreen whack-a-mole game you're looking at, and as far as we can tell, it's the world's first Android mobile game. Needless to say, this is just a quick technical demo created by the bods at Qualcomm, rather than a real taster for what Android has to offer mobile game developers.

In fact, in our conversations with developers and publishers this week, we're picking up a groundswell of enthusiasm for how Android could benefit the mobile games market – something we'll be looking at in depth in a feature soon.

The form factor will possibly be tweaked just a bit before this tech makes it into commercial mobile phones.
