Mobile Suit Gundam U.C.0079 blows us away

Great big fighty 3D robots on an NTT DoCoMo phone

Mobile Suit Gundam U.C.0079 blows us away

One of the most popular stands at Mobile World Congress is that of Japanese operator NTT DoCoMo. Most journalists are unaccountably queuing up to test a handset that measures how bad their breath is (and given they're journalists at a trade show, it's bad).

But not us. We made a beeline for the games section of the stand. We'd already seen the motion-sensing Chokkan games during our visit to DoCoMo HQ last year, so we skipped those. But alongside them, there were some handsets running an awesome-looking game called Mobile Suit Gundam U.C.0079.

As you may have guessed from the title, it involves enormous robots beating the living daylights out of one another. There's probably a convoluted plotline to justify it, but we couldn't understand it.

But anyway, the game involves yomping around 3D environments laying waste to enemy robots with guns or a glowing sword thing. When you get close up, there are some ace cutaways to show robots being dumped on their arses. It really is spectacular, as this video shows:

It's part of DoCoMo's MEGA GAME range, which weigh in at a maximum of 1MB in file size, and have been designed to run on phones with VGA-resolution screens. This particular handset was the P905i. We know Gundam games don't necessarily sell well in the west, but if someone could make this kind of roaming 3D combat game for N-Gage, it would be a true showcase for the platform. Get to it, Nokia! In the meantime, we'll have to lust after DoCoMo's range from afar.
