Europe gets previously US-only Patapon demo

And a bonus Spear of Protection item, too

A few days ago we reported on a scheme Sony America was running with US retailer Gamestop to give PSP players a level kickstart and bonus weapon for the upcoming tribal rhythm game Patapon.

The scheme would enable people to play through an early demo of the the game in Gamestop stores and save their progress. Then, after buying the full version of the game on release, they'd not only be further ahead but a special edition Spear of Protection item would appear as if by magic in their inventory.

At the time we thought it unlikely we'd see the demo cropping up in shops here, but it turns out we were only half right. (Or wrong, depending on how you look at it.)

Instead, we'll be getting the demo through the PSP Store. The same game levels will be made available on February 21st and its save game will work with the final game and give us the Spear of Protection just like the US demo, reports Eurogamer.

Of course, since the game comes out here the day after, on February 22nd, we won't be getting to play it a considerable amount of time before release but it's still a cool way for Sony to drum up some support for the very promising beat-based game.

Just in case you've missed the video and our hands-on preview, Patapon is from the makers of LocoRoco (which alone makes this a game worth getting excited about) and combines strategy and rhythm. We'll have a review for you shortly.
