The Writer's Guild of America - yes the one that's on strike, shutting down the Golden Globes, not to mention all US TV and film making - has announced the nominees for its new videogame writing award (not on strike when it comes to promoting itself then).

This year is the first that videogame scriptwriters will be recognised by their industry with their own award.

Games released between the December 1st 2006 and November 30th 2007 were eligible for nomination. Out of the five nominees, one - Dead Head Fred - is a PSP-only title (written by Dave Ellis and Adam Cogan) while there are a further two multiformat titles - Crash of the Titans and The Simpsons Game - which saw a release on both PSP and DS.

The other two nominations are PC titles The Witcher and World In Conflict.

Back in our review of Dead Head Fred, we didn't actually praise the game for its script, but we did say it was like an interactive Tim Burton film, which is praise enough, and awarded it Pocket Gamer's Silver award (surely an even highly accolade than some scrappy Writer's Guild award). We'll let you know the winner when it's announced at a swanky ceremony in LA on February 9th.
