Sony has released pictures of the impending PSP Skype headset, designed for use with the Skype communication service that was recently announced for PSP Slim & Lite.

Despite the new pictures featuring a PSP with a Skype logo on the screen though, they looks suspiciously like the old official Sony PSP in-ear headphones combined with a headset and microphone. We're waiting for confirmation from Sony as to whether this is a new device or just new bundle, rebranded to be sold as the official Skype headset.

If it is a new add-on, presumably it will be released at around the same time as the Skype service itself, which is due to launch globally at the end of January. The price of the headset hasn't been revealed yet.

The PSP's new Skype compatibility was unveiled two days ago at the Consumer Electronics Show. The service will be freely available courtesy of a downloadable software update and will enable PSP users to make free voice calls to and instant message other Skype users when logged in online. For a charge, it also enables calls to and from landlines and mobiles.
