DS plans for full downloadable games and increased interactivity
US president Reggie talks up dual screen future
DS gamers in the US could soon be downloading full games to their console via their Wii - at least that's according to Reggie Fils-Aime (pictured), and he should know. He's president of Nintendo of America.
Fils-Aime was talking to the New York Times. It's reporting him as saying: "Complete games as well as game samplers will be able to be downloaded into the Wii using its broadband connection, and then transferred wirelessly to the DS".
He also discusses other DS functions beyond game-playing. In Japan, the console can be used to give information during museum tours, while a test in the US recently allowed fans at a baseball game to watch the game on their DS as well as use it to order food and view statistics.
"To aggressively drive DS business we need to provide other forms of entertainment to excite the consumer," Fils-Aime says in the article.
Of course, this doesn't mean much for the UK market seeing as we're still yet to see the DS Download Channel currently available for Wii in Japan. But it's significant Nintendo is considering news ways in which the DS could be used.
Indeed, with so many of the consoles in the hands of people who previously would have been considered non-gamers, the DS should provide plenty of opportunities for Nintendo to generate new revenue streams, other than just selling games.
