Back in June last year we reported remakes of the classic 1983 laserdisc arcade game Dragon's Lair were in the works for DS and PSP. And fans - anyone? - out there will be pleased to hear it's still very much going ahead. Providing developer United Coders can find a publisher for the PSP version that is.

The developer today announced it's putting final touches to the DS version of Dragon's Lair, presumably meaning its release is quite imminent. It then hopes work can begin on the PSP game in February to make it ready for a Christmas 2008 release - always assuming a publisher comes in and ponies up some cash, of course.

The original arcade Dragon's Lair featured the most cinematic graphics anyone had seen in a game... in the '80s. We use the word 'game' in the loosest sense of the term however. Very little was actually playable and players pretty much just sat through the lengthy and repetitive cartoon sequences.

On both DS and PSP, there are now two distinctive experiences - an Arcade mode for hardcore sadists wanting to sit through the original exactly as it was, and a reworked Director's Cut, which offers a more linear, coherent experience, with extra lives and scenes making it all more bearable.

Whether that'll be enough to make Dragon's Lair a hit on the handhelds, we'll have to wait and see. PSP owners hoping to get their hands on the game will need to keep their fingers crossed it can pick up a publisher for their platform. All we can say is, be careful what you wish for.
