Update: Sony has now confirmed Patapon is due in Europe in early 2008, most likely around the same time frame as the US release.

Sony must have heard us. Only earlier today we mentioned we should be doing a little more on Patapon after a reader mentioned the game on our forum, and as if by magic the first official western details of the game have emerged.

We first spotted the game at E3 but aside from knowing it was a quirky rhythm-based 2D platform destined for the Japanese market, with striking visuals courtesy of French graphic artist Rolito and developed by the team behind the delightful LocoRoco, we weren't too sure if we'd ever see it over here.

Well, now we know that it will make the US at least. Sony Europe has yet to confirm the title but over in North America it will arrive in February 2008.

What else do we know? How about that the Patapons, a brave and noble tribe, were driven from their home, Patapolis, by the evil Zigoton army? A warrior race themselves, the Patapons patiently await the sound of their god's war drum before facing their enemy and reclaiming their land.

No prizes for guessing who's holding the drum sticks, then.

So, yes, it's down to you to lead the Patapons through a series of epic battles against opposing armies and gigantic monsters. And you do this by mastering six drumbeats to march, attack, defend, power-up, use magic, and retreat over 30 missions in a variety of environments (from swamps and volcanoes to gorges and deserts) and differing dynamics (hunting, escort and boss battles, to name three).

If that sounds a little lightweight, consider the fact that you get to collect resources and grow your tribe, as well as making strategic use of the various warrior types and weapon and shield upgrades at your disposal.

In addition, five music-based mini-games are also included and present you with further opportunities to earn more special upgrades for your gorgeously funky army.

We don't know about you, but we can't wait to get our hands on this. Click 'Track It!' and as soon as we find out more, so will you.
