'Tis the season to peddle licences

O2 mobile game download charts and new releases: December 7th

It's officially December, which means that it's time for the Christmas blockbuster films to explode reliably onto cinema screens, prompting children up and down the country to add one more thing to their nag list.

The film commanding the merchandising money this season is The Golden Compass and this week sees the inevitable release (directly alongside the film) of the accompanying mobile game. But it's not alone, of course. Cashing in on another movie licence, albeit in a thinly-veiled-not-quite-official sort of a way, is BEEzzz (Bee Movie anyone?) which is also buzzing into view this week.

Of the other new releases, we reckon the thoroughbred titles Heroes Lore and SWAT Elite Troops will soon command coveted spots within the top ten. Yet sadly, despite being perhaps the strongest of the new releases, the same will probably not be the case for Table Tennis Star. Truly there is no justice in this world.

Mind you that's an easy maxim to refute when you look at the obvious justness of the current top five, all of which are thoroughly deserving of their lofty positions. We can't help but feel that there is little necessity for two Tetris titles within the top ten but at least it's proof that the classic puzzler will never die.

Speaking of classics, it's nice to see The Sims 2 is still hanging in there. And the entrance of the slightly left-field High School Musical proves that the despite what the rest of the chart might suggest, the mobile games buying public are still open to new concepts and licences. (Even appalling ones.)

Perhaps next week will see a proper shake up of the charts, or will everyone be too busy with frenzied bouts of Christmas shopping to be buying games? We'll be back in seven days to let you know.

In the meantime, the games below are available to buy via the O2 games portal or by texting the short code from a compatible O2 handset. Enjoy!
