Intriguing new title gives you seven days to live

Square Enix announces The World Ends With You for DS

Square Enix today announced it will be releasing DS-exclusive title The World Ends With You across Europe in spring 2008.

The game already exists in Japan under the title Subarashiki Kono Sekai and offers an original sounding premise. Its lead character Neku wakes up one day to a phone message saying he only has seven days before he will cease to exist. Rather than waste it worrying or trying to fulfil his life goals, he instead sets about shopping for the coolest fashions.

It's an admirable, if strange, reaction, but apparently Neku stands a chance at restoring the city's population and saving himself by getting his hands on the hottest fashion, friends and fighting skills.

The World Ends With You promises to be achingly stylish thanks to both this premise and also the game's setting. It takes place in Tokyo's trendiest district and is apparently influenced by all things Japanese and modern. The European version's soundtrack will deliver a range of hip-hop, rock and techno, while you'll be able to trade trends and items with friends over wi-fi. Activating the 'Chance Encounter' mode means you'll also be able to share data with fellow gamers you bump into in the real world.

Not too much more has been said about the gameplay itself, but Neku can apparently use psychic powers to read people's thoughts, put words into their minds and move objects, which sounds quite useful. Other than that, we know there are also mini-games playable for up to four people.

Anyone with a love of neon, techno, Tokyo and fashion is surely going to love this. We'll bring you more news on it as soon as we get more info.
