After the boost it received from the release of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII last week, the redesigned PSP has gone on to sell a rather impressive 326,645 units in its first three days at retail.

To put it into context, in the UK the new model managed 17,000. In a week.

According to figure-loving Enterbrain (publisher of Japanese game bible, Weekly Famitsu), standalone Slim & Lite units accounted for 250,702 of that number, with the remaining 75,943 coming in the form of the Crisis Core bundle available to Japanese players.

Is it enough to kick-start a PSP resurgence in the handheld's homeland? It's too early to tell, obviously, but this kind of performance certainly doesn't hurt. Provided Sony can maintain the momentum and back it up with appropriate releases until Christmas, things could be looking particularly bright for the PSP as it heads into 2008.
