Level-5, the developer behind the renowned Dragon Quest series (amongst other memorable releases – most recently the excellent Jeanne d'Arc on PSP), has revealed that it is working on a football RPG for Nintendo's handheld.

Inazuma Eleven, as the game is known, sees you starting off as a talented player in the school team. As captain, you must lead your squad and beat opposing teams while making your way to the top of the school football league.

In between matches you get to wander around your town, looking for players to join your team – up to 1000 such young hopefuls are promised, according to Level-5.

Once signed up and on the pitch, your players are under your complete control. Using the stylus, you get to issue commands for the team to follow, as well as decide on context sensitive options that pop up throughout the game.

As no release date for Japan has been set, it's a little early to be talking about a European (or even US) version. Nevertheless, Level-5's high profile within the gaming community, not to mention the fact that its productions have a history of appearing in the west, should hopefully ensure we'll eventually get to see Inazuma Eleven over here.

We'll obviously bring you more details, including screenshots, when we get them.
