Nobody knows quite what Apple's plans are for iPhone gaming, apart from the fact that games were conspicuous by their absence at the handset's US launch last month.

However, PopCap Games has seized the initiative, and made a customised version of its Bejeweled puzzler that can be played through the iPhone's Safari web browser.

If you've got an iPhone, all you have to do is head to the PopCap website (www.popcap.com) using Safari, and follow the links to play Bejeweled. Apparently, it uses the iPhone's "unique display and input controls", which presumably means you use your thumbs to swap jewels around on the touchscreen.

The iPhone version was created by Polish developer Arkadiusz Mlynarczyk, who we'll be remembering next time we play Scrabble.

The game's release is good news for iPhone owners, though, as it shows that it is possible to get decent games running on the handset, even if they aren't downloadable.

In fact, having games playable through Safari might allow some more innovative features as time goes on, such as online high-scores and even multiplayer, which would be more complex if they were being played in downloadable games.

Watch this space for more news on iPhone gaming, anyway. Hopefully, there'll be a few more titles by the time iPhone comes out in the UK later this year.
