Up to now, mobile skateboarding has mainly been about Tony Hawk. EA is aiming to change that with Skate, a suitably gritty skateboarding title that puts you in the (scuffed) shoes of an up-and-coming skater, looking to make your name by pulling tricks for grizzled pros.

The game sees you skating along horizontal levels, leaping and grinding to impress your peers and progress to the next section. You score points for stringing a series of tricks together, and can earn new clothes for your skater along the way.

There's also half-pipe levels, where you get all the fun of busting mid-air tricks without the real-world risk of falling on your bum and being laughed at by teenagers.

We've been playing a preview version, and the game eases you in gently with a tutorial section explaining the various tricks and how to pull them off. Being uncool Brits, we haven't heard of the skaters, but we're sure they're all suitably 'rad'.

When Skate comes out, it looks like it'll be giving the Hawkster some stiff competition. Click 'Track It!' for an alert when we review the game.
