Top 10 BREW 3D mobile games we'd like to see in the UK
|

As you'll know if you read our story the other day, mobile operator 3 has signed a deal to bring Qualcomm's BREW platform to Europe, including the UK. For gamers, this means all manner of 3D goodness, as Jon explained in his piece comparing BREW to Java.

So what games should you be looking forward to? Being UK-based, we don't have much hands-on experience with the top BREW 3D titles. But we know a man who has: Mike Yuen, who's Qualcomm's games guru. (He has a more serious title on his business card, obviously.)

Anyway, we asked Mike to tell us ten of the most impressive BREW 3D games that he thinks us Europeans should be excited about.

Note: this is NOT any kind of confirmation that the ten games are coming out in the UK on 3. It's just Mike's view of what's cool on BREW in the US.

1. Derek Jeter Baseball 3D 2007 (Gameloft) Mike says: "Simply one of the best, if not the best, 3D baseball games I've seen on a phone. Beyond the great gameplay, the attention to detail is fantastic and the game also does a nice job of showcasing what's possible with audio in a mobile title. Highly recommended if you're a fan of American baseball."
2. Dirge of Cerberus Lost Episode Final Fantasy VII (Square Enix) Mike says: "I was very excited to see the Final Fantasy franchise make its appearance on mobile, and in 3D no less. The great thing about Dirge of Cerberus Lost Episode is that it allows fans of Final Fantasy to enjoy the same expansive environments and gameplay that they have grown to love on consoles with their mobile phones. It's good for the industry as a whole anytime we can get a group of hardcore gamers to embrace a successful franchise as it expands onto the mobile platform. Developer Ideaworks3D really are masters at doing 3D on mobile devices – enough so they convinced a Japanese publisher to let them work on one of their most prized brands."
3. EA SPORTS Fight Night Round 3 (EA Mobile) Mike says: "EA really did a knock out job with this 3D title. The boxers look great, with lots of detail (everyone has the requisite six-pack abs) and you also get that closeup in-your-face cinematic style that's made gamers big fans of the console version." (Java review)
4. Brothers In Arms: Earned In Blood (Gameloft) Mike says: "Even though this game has been on the market for some time now, it is still one of the best mobile 3D games out there, and is one of those titles that makes people scratch their heads because it's running on a phone. It recently took home the 2007 BREW Developers Award for Best Game Application. I loved the WWII atmosphere it created as you played the game." (Java review)
5. Prey (Skyzone Entertainment) Mike says: "This should be coming out soon. It's a technical tour de force wrapped up in the form of a first-person shooter (not something you see every day on a phone). What the guys at Machineworks (the developer) have been able to create with no hardware acceleration is simply amazing. Really impresssive."
6. 3D Tilt-A-World (Super Happy Fun Fun) Mike says: "Now here's a 3D title that really pushes the innovation envelope. Utilizing camera-based motion detection technology, Super Happy Fun Fun has created a gameplay experience beyond the D-pad. As you tilt the phone you're able to maneuver a ball through levels and puzzles – very, very cool and I hope will inspire others to think differently when designing mobile games."
7. Massive Snowboarding (Gameloft) Mike says: "Another oldie, but a goodie. Massive Snowboarding is a fun title that has proven the test of time. It's a fast-paced game that's easy to pick up and enjoy for both the casual and more hardcore mobile gamers. Like many of the BREW 3D games listed here it's also able to run on mass market devices and not just high-end smartphones."
8. Fox Motocross 3D (Superscape) Mike says: "Jon Jordan already high-lighted Superscape's Ducati 3D Extreme in a previous article so I figured I'd mention an off-road title instead. Fox Motocross 3D is another great example of how Superscape has elevated their 3D prowess over the years – enough so that they can compete with any of the big boys now."
9. Orcs & Elves (EA Mobile) Mike says: "First came DOOM RPG and now Orcs & Elves. Going back to his love of D&D, John Carmack and the folks at Fountainhead cut this game from the same mold as your traditional fantasy RPG played in a first-person shooter perspective. Story, monsters, potions, gold, and more can be found in this one."
10. 3D Rollercoaster Rush (Digital Chocolate) Mike says: "Digital Chocolate had a winner with the 2D version of Rollercoaster Rush and with the 3D version they've succeeded in making the game better. They employ very cool camera views that switch during the game play. Like another one of their great titles, Tower Bloxx, Stuart and I both sit here wondering why they haven't decided to release Live Arcade versions yet."

Thanks Mike! So there you go – plenty to look forward to if and when BREW makes its way here. But if you're a US gamer who knows something we don't about the coolest games over there, please do tell us in the comments below or on our new mobile games forum.
