3 signs up for supercharged mobile gaming

BREW is finally coming to the UK... hopefully
|

Before we start, we ought to make it clear that this story involves a certain amount of speculation.

See, 3 has announced plans to launch handsets using Qualcomm's BREW platform, which you may have read about on here before when we've dribbled over the amazing 3D mobile games that people are playing in the US.

Trouble is, no UK operator has ever offered it before, for industry/political reasons that are frankly of little concern to Pocket Gamer readers. But now 3 has signed up, and plans to launch BREW handsets at some point in the future (though it's not saying when).

Here's the speculation part, then: 3 actually has mobile operators in 11 different countries, including Italy, Sweden and Austria besides the UK. 3 hasn't announced whether its BREW deal will cover all of these countries, or just a few of them.

But our hunch is that the UK will be included, since 3 UK has been one of the more innovative operators as far as mobile gaming goes, and we can't see it passing up the opportunity.

Big publishers like EA Mobile, Gameloft and Glu Mobile all release BREW games in the US, so there'll be no lack of support.

Rest assured, we're chasing 3 up now to find out all the details of if and when BREW is launching in the UK, and what it might mean for mobile gamers.
