New screens from Crisis Core - Final Fantasy VII on PSP

It's debatable whether Final Fantasy fans – or indeed anyone with a nodding acquaintance of console games of the past decade – need to see these six new screenshots from the upcoming Crisis Core – Final Fantasy VII role-playing game. It's certainly certain that they will surprise no one.

But then, while these lavish rendered characters could have come from any Square promo reel this century (really, we couldn't tell at a glance), Core Crisis is very firmly an update of one specific title – 1997's PlayStation best-seller, Final Fantasy VII.

While the original press release (we're still waiting for an update) spoke of this PSP outing being the 'fourth chapter' in game creator Tetsuya Nomura's vision of Final Fantasy VII, it's equally clear the developer will look to first hook veterans (and the specialist press) nostalgic for simpler times of mako reactors, materia, BritPop and 'nice' Tony Blair.

Will Core Crisis' further 'new secrets' and the promise of an 'all-new storyline' add up to more than some spiffing cut-scenes? We hope so, but then we've seen it all before. If all this is double Dutch to you, though, then, a) welcome to Final Fantasy, and b) you're probably in for a treat.

Core Crisis – Final Fantasy VII is due out in Japan in September. We're still waiting for worldwide release dates.
