It seems that July is going to be the month of PC-to-DS strategy games. Not only are we expecting Ubisoft to release The Settlers – beforehand, Disney's going to nip in with ANNO 1701: Dawn of Discovery.

Both should be sterling experiences, although how the developers of each approach the task of replacing some of the more managerial, PC-style admin gameplay with lighter, touchscreen-sensitive fun seems likely to be the crucial element.

Certainly, having recently caught up with its development director Pete Walentin, we're looking forward to Anno 1701, which makes it a good time to enjoy some reasonably detailed video footage of how the game will work:

What particularly impresses us are the various shots of the stylus-based interface, with a neat circular selection panel available for tasks such as building, resource management and town planning. Other footage shows how you'll have to set taxes and meet the needs of the five classes of citizens. There's also a bit of light trading demonstrated, at least until the stirring music takes a turn for the worst and we're watching a fiery volcano spouting out lava all over your poor, defenceless town. Anno 1701: Dawn of Discovery is due for release on July 13th. (The Settlers land two weeks later on July 27th.)
