Would Comic Book Guy be right if he called this 'the best Simpsons game ever'?

The Simpsons is getting another game, but from the sound of things it's not going to be another cynical exercise in licensed skateboarding or Crazy Taxi goes to Springfield. Rather, we're promised a full-on realisation of the rich and imperfect world that Mat Groening's team has so lovingly nurtured over the years.

The game is a multi-format release from EA and will appear on both the DS and the PSP, as well as the home consoles. There's no word on exactly what gaming genre the title will fall under, but we're told a 'sprawling and mind-busting' storyline has been penned by the show's writers especially for the game.

You'll be able to play as Homer, Marge, Bart and Lisa (what no Maggie?) using various special powers to save the world from chaos. What the source of this chaos is or what these powers are has not yet been revealed, but the promise of being able to journey through all of Springfield and beyond sounds tantalising.

With barely a "Doh!", executive producer Scot Amos commented: "Our goal in developing The Simpsons Game is to create the most original game ever, which is a lofty goal and only possible given the close collaboration with The Simpsons creative team."

A lofty aim indeed. Although it's hard to imagine this game hitting such a high-falutin' target, based on the talent involved we have every reason to hope that this will at the very least be the best Simpsons game yet.
