There are now so many WWII romps out there that arguably they're a genre of their own, regardless of what specific type of game the war's inspired. Invariably, however, they're principally about running around shooting Nazis, and Micazook Mobile's upcoming first-person mobile shooter Covert Ops is no different.

As an Allied soldier, your mission is to fight your way tooth and nail to an underground facility, which you must destroy to thwart Nazi efforts to build an A-bomb – not terribly original then.

But that is certainly not to say Covert Ops has nothing new to offer. From the screenshots, fighting World War II from the comfort of your own decade has never looked so good on mobile.

This is a rare first-person shooter for phones, and its 16 levels are filled with stairs, lifts, trains and wide open outdoor areas that might well make this game one of the most impressive yet for the devices, depending on how the graphics hold up in battlfield conditions of course. The Allies never had to contend with jerky stuttering visuals, for instance, so we'll be looking for a silky smooth framerate – on appropriate handsets, naturally.

Eye-candy buzzwords like texture shadowing and real-time lighting effects aside, the press release is rather scant on details, although it does seem you'll have six weapons at your disposal for dealing righteous justice.

We're certainly looking forward to getting our trigger fingers on Covert Ops to see if mobile phones are really ready for first-person shooters. Click 'Track It!' to make sure you don't miss our review.
