Fight Night Round 3 and Nascar 07 under the thumb

Live from CES: Hands on with EA Mobile's new games

CES isn't really a show about mobile games. It's more about gadgets, gizmos, 108-inch LCD tellies, and robots. But some mobile publishers are here, namely EA Mobile and Gameloft, showing off their wares to passing gadget-hounds.

We caught up with EA Mobile, who were showing a couple of games we haven't seen in the UK yet. Sorry, no screenshots yet, so you'll have to rely on our powers of description.

Fight Night Round 3 is a boxing title with proper licensed punchers in – including Oscar de la Hoya, Roy Jones Jr and Bernard Hopkins. Apparently they wanted to get a Brit in, namely Lennox Lewis, but it didn't quite happen.

The game features a career mode, where you work your way up the ranks, as well as just taking on quick fights and a training mode. The version we played was on a high-end handset, so had lovely 3D boxers dancing round each other.

There's also a wide variety of punches, from jabs and hooks to proper haymakers and power shots.

Fight Night Round 3 is definitely coming to Europe, probably next month.

The second new game we played at CES was Nascar 07, although unfortunately this looks less likely for a European release, on account of the region's inexplicable preference for the vastly more dull Formula 1 over rollicking NASCAR racing.

Still, it looks great, with a stripped down control system that focuses less on pinpoint driving, and more on lurking in the slipstream of other drivers and then changing lanes at the right time to roar past them.

EA Mobile has managed to squeeze bags of cars onto the track too, so it's certainly a challenge. As we said, a European release looks unlikely, but never say never.
