Homebrew enthusiasts will warn you off upgrading your PSP firmware (the built-in operating software that manages activity on your PSP) but it's getting more and more irresistible as Sony adds more features. A big update recently included the ability to play AAC files, download video through RSS and, for those lucky few with PlayStation 3s, the ability to download and play PSone games.

Does that tip the scales for you? If so, follow our guide to make the upgrade as painless as possible. But, to reiterate, don't do it if you're into homebrew.

First of all, you'll need to be able to connect to the Internet. Follow our guide to set up a wireless connection. Done that? Scroll all the way left on your home screen then all the way to the top of the menu. Make sure Network Update is highlighted and press 'X'. How to update your PSP firmware 1

Press 'X' to start the update then press 'right' on the D-Pad to accept the licence agreement. Read what's in the update and press 'right' one more time. Press 'X' to begin updating. It is vital you don't unplug or turn off your PSP until the process is complete; you could cause a lot of trouble. Finished? Congratulations! Welcome to the world of no homebrew, restricted gaming.
